Skylar deWitte – Phoenix World Burn Congress Scholarship
“The 2020 World Burn Congress was my first time attending a burn conference. I thought the speakers were compelling, and I thought there was a good coverage of classes to help people through their burn recovery. It was hard at times to stay focused, but I think that has as much to do with the reality of e-learning as anything, I would love to try to go in person to a World Burn in the future and see how that compares. I found the open mic’s to be super emotionally engaging – I haven’t cried that much in a while, and just the overall outpouring of real emotional rawness was overwhelming at times, but mostly in a good way. Now that I’m a few years out, there are whole days where I don’t think about my burns, and I think it was a really good reality check to spend a few days keying back into that part of my life. After hearing someone speak this morning, I’m interesting in becoming a “peer supporter” to help people who are still in the hospital (not sure how/if that works currently with covid), and that will be the next step I’m going to take in my continued recovery. Thanks again for helping to make this whole thing possible, it benefited me and I’m sure many others as well”.
